OF THE THESIS Decentralized Spectrum Allocation Schemes for Cognitive Radio Networking by Srinivas Pinagapany Thesis Director: Prof. Predrag Spasojevic and Prof. Dipankar Raychaudhuri This thesis presents simulation and an experimental investigation of a decentralized spectrum allocation algorithm for secondary user co-existence in a cognitive radio network. Conventional centralized approaches use a Base Station (BS) or a centralized server with a global view of spectrum availability to carry out spectrum allocation. To keep this global view updated in real-time requires significant amount of signaling between the users and the BS, requiring additional spectrum. On the other hand, a decentralized spectrum allocation has the advantage of low-overhead for control information signaling and is typically more appropriate for ad-hoc network deployments. Various frameworks for decentralized resource allocation have already been proposed (Game theoretic framework, markov decision theoretic framework etc.). However, a full system implementation of any such technique has not been attempted. Inspired by the TCP congestion control mechanism, an Additive Increase Multiplicative Decrease (AIMD) based decentralized spectral allocation algorithm is proposed. It leads to a network-level fairness and efficient spectral usage in a cognitive radio network. A network consisting of only secondary users is considered for this problem and each secondary user uses a Non-Contiguous OFDM (NC-OFDM) transceiver

Decentralized robust spectrum allocation for cognitive radio wireless mesh networks
During the last decade we have seen an explosive growth in the deployment of wireless networks in unlicensed frequency bands, mainly driven by the great success of the IEEE 802.11 standard. In addition to its traditional last-hop usage, it has also been widely employed for Internet access infrastructure such as wireless mesh networks (WMNs). A problem that is envisioned in the near future is th...

Cognitive Radio network (CRN) is a network composed of elements that, through learning and reasoning, dynamically adapt to varying network conditions in order to improve spectrum efficiency for wireless networking. To investigate opportunistic scheduling, this paper develops a methodology based on the jointly consideration of the power control, spectrum allocation and flow routing. The twophras...
متن کاملAn overview of medium access control strategies for opportunistic spectrum access in cognitive radio networks
Cognitive radio (CR) is a promising wireless technology that provides efficient spectral usage. Medium Access Control (MAC) has an important role in several cognitive radio functions such as sensing, spectrum mobility, resource allocation and spectrum sharing. We focus on the opportunistic spectrum access (OSA) functionality of the CR network MAC layer by which the secondary users (SUs) access ...
متن کاملDynamic spectrum allocation with admission control based on cognitive radio for QoS support in multiple wireless network
Cognitive radio is an emerging technology in wireless access, aimed at vastly improving the way radio spectrum is utilized. In this article, we investigate the performance improvement gained by applying cognitive radio to a multiple wireless service providers (WSPs). We consider several WSPs and two types of users: primary (licensed) and secondary (unlicensed) users. Two different schemes are p...
